
Location
Alampur is a small locality situated on the left bank of Tungbhadra
river, in the state of Andhra Pradesh. The place falls in the
Mahabubnagar district which is about 95 kilometres from the famous
city, Hyderabad. Kurnool town, which is also a known place in Andhra
Pradesh lies in the vicinity. The temples are located some 100
kilometres further and that accounts for the popularity of the place
as a weekend getaway from Hyderabad.
Overview
Alampur is one holy place with great historical importance. Though
there are no hard evidences that can trace the civilization here but
the remains of some ancient temples provides a good clue. The place
constitutes one of the gateway to yet another famous place,
Srisailam. Alampur like the latter is popular as a holy place. The
place is many a times referred as Southern Kashi (Dakshin Kashi) and
that gives an idea of the importance associated with this place. The
marvellous temples and remains of some ancient ones provide great
specimens of Chalukyan architecture. The region, in the past, has
been under the influence of many South Indian dynasties. The region
was ruled by Narasimha and Suryanarayana dynasty in the past. The
town as such has turned out to be one famous pilgrimage centre.
Attractions
One of the primary sites at Alampur is where temple structures
stand. There are a total of nine temples provided here. Some of the
structures have been dilapidating against the ravages of the time.
The temples are dedicated to Lord Shiva and every temple has its
name ending with Brahma. The Nava Brahma temples were built by
Chalukyas of Badami. The other temples include Swarga Brahma, Padma
Brahma, Bala Brahma, Garuda Brahma, Kumara Brahma and Visva Brahma.
Also present at the site are bas releifs of Lord Vishnu's
incarnations. There is Narsimha temple located close by. A cluster
of about twenty temples is present a little south of Alampur, at a
place called Papanasanam.
Accessibility
Alampur is connected by roads and railway services are provided to
the nearby Kurnool town. Kurnool is few kilometres away from Alampur
and the train continues to be convenient means of reaching the
place. Private buses are available from the nearby districts.
Accommodation
There are a number of cheap and budget hotels located in the town
that provide for the accommodation and catering.
